Historic Race Car
1966 Shelby GT-350 S/N SFM6S151:
This is an original Carry Over 1965 Shelby GT-350, 1 of 252 cars that Shelby re-numbered and sold as the first 1966 model year cars. The carry over or left over cars are very desirable as they have the best of the 1965 GT-350 such as over ride traction bars, lowered front suspension A-Arms, and other details, combined with the more evolved looks of the 1966 GT-350 cars side brake cooling scoops, Plexiglas rear quarter windows, and a back seat for the kids!
Its value as a street car overlooked, in 2003 former owner Jon Carey had 6S151 converted to a purpose built vintage race car to run in the highly competitive SVRA and VSCDA Group 6 (B/Production). It was painted in the incorrect colors of black with silver stripes at the owners request to stand out from the sea of white and blue Shelbys on the vintage race circuit. I purchased 151 in 2005, and since then have continued to race and develop it extensively. Typically, 6S151 sees around 8 vintage races a year across the country.
Unlike many vintage race cars that have stroker motors and other modern tricks, 6S151 is prepared in strict accordance to the rule book. It runs a de-stroked Boss 302 Ford block with a total displacement of 292 CID, and uses cast iron cylinder heads. As per vintage rules, it is topped with an Edelbrock Performer dual plane intake and Holley 4bbl carburetor. Careful preparation and the best parts available allow it to twist to 8900 rpm, and it makes a little over 540hp. Not bad for 292 cubic inches! The transmission is a Ford Toploader with Jerico internals, and the rear is a Ford 9" with 4.11 gears and a locker. Braking is accomplished by period correct 1966 Lincoln four piston disc brakes up front and 11 drum brakes in the rear. Wheels are standard American Racing Torque Thrusts, 15x8, that are wrapped with era-correct Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Special bias ply tires. Of course, certain items have been upgraded to modern standards for the safety of the idiot behind the wheel, such as the roll cage, fire and fuel systems, and drivers seat/ harness system.
