Classic American Muscle Car

As a collector of preservation class level unrestored cars, it takes one heck of an original car to impress me. This 1966 GTO did more than just impress me, it simply blew me away! In a world of originality "imposters," this car sets an example that 99.5% of the others should be compared to. Yes, it is that good!

This GTO offers complete originality, desirable options, select ownership and exhibition accolades worthy of my praise above. Under the care of initial owner Leroy Oudekerk, this car was minimally driven over a period of 29 years, accruing less than 20,000 miles by the time of its sale in 1996 to Steve Smith. Mr. Smith relished the mighty cars famously rumbling engine during extended cruising. Accruing another 35,000 miles over the following four years, Mr. Smith exhibited the enviable GTO at the GTO Owners Association of America car shows and events across the nation. In 2010, the Pontiac was purchased by Randy Pribyl, an expert in GTOs who is well known in marque circles for his knowledgeable articles in GTOAA club publications. It is from Randy that I purchased this car from in 2011.

Now, the best original car in the world isn't worth much if it isn't the "right one." This Reef Turquoise over Teal GTO is factory optioned with a pushbutton AM radio and antenna, Rally Gauge instrument cluster with Tachometer, a center floor console with custom (optional) walnut shift knob, Deluxe wheel covers and Soft-Ray tinted glass. Mechanical features include the Muncie M20 four-speed transmission and 3.55:1 Saf-T-Trak rear axle ratio that means you can actually venture out on to the freeway!

Still possessing 100% of its original factory applied paint, top and interior, this matching-numbers GTO has never been restored. Just to reiterate, this GTO has its complete ORIGINAL drivetrain, all of its factory paint and interior, and has never been bumped, hurt, painted on, or otherwise restored. The devoted care by enthusiasts and an odometer reading of just over 58,100 original miles have resulted in a benchmark muscle car worthy of Preservation Class exhibition. In fact, this car won the coveted GTOAA Gold Award at the July 2011 national convention in Bowling Green, Kentucky, scoring 373 out of 400 possible points. Given that many well-restored examples have failed to score more than 370 points, this score is even more impressive. Since winning the GTOAA Gold Award under Randy's ownership, I personally have invested another 100+ hours meticulously detailing the car from the ground up and correcting what few items were incorrect. Take a good look at the undercarriage shots and you'll get an idea. This is a factory undercoat delete car that still has shiny factory paint on all of the floors and inner panels. Ever seen one like that before? I have also had my shop spend many hours going through the car from stem to stern servicing every mechanical component so the car operates as new. All of the brake hydraulics have been rebuilt, all wheel bearings and seals replaced and/or serviced, the original radiator serviced, you name it and it has been tuned or tweaked to perfection. A new concours correct Gardner exhaust has been fitted (with their stealth upgraded mufflers for that true GTO sound), new correct 7.75-14 tires, and even a vintage set of NOS Delco high-performance shocks.

As you would expect after all of this, the car drives with extraordinary power, smooth and crisp shifting, and magnificent chassis integrity only the best original unrestored cars can offer. It pulls like a freight train, chirps the tires on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts if you so desire, tracks straight and true without a single squeak or rattle, and stops with smooth, powerful brakes that make you wonder why anybody would bolt on a set of 4-wheel discs!

In addition to its minimal ownership, this car claims excellent documentation, including its original owner's manual, warranty book, Protect-O-Plate that verifies matching-numbers authenticity, and of course full Pontiac Historical Services paperwork. Even the original Uniroyal Tiger Paw 7.75-14 spare tire still lives in the trunk. I also have a list of all three prior owners and their current phone numbers.

This GTO promises its next caretaker not only pure Detroit muscle, but also bragging rights due to its incredible originality. We all know unrestored cars are finally getting recognized for their significance and few real muscle cars survived as well as this one. The best part about an untouched, thoroughly sorted and documented car like this is that you can buy it with confidence. Original paint means you know it has never been hurt or rusted, a like-new original interior like reinforces the care its three owners have lavished upon it. This is a muscle car that has never been cut up, crashed, upside down in a creek, or just left for dead after it was beaten to its death. If you've lusted after a prime example of the original muscle car you won't be disappointed. Especially after one good run through the gears!
